Art of Agile: NYC
Want to make a 'good' team 'brilliant'?
Knowing Agile is one thing. Understanding how to use Agile methods to turn a capable team into an unstoppable force of nature is another. James Shore and Diana Larsen will teach you how to get your whole team (devs and non-devs) speaking the same language. Building working software in 90 minute iterations, you'll learn what's really important (minimum marketable feature), and how to get it done. Take your agile fluency to the next level and sign up for Art of Agile NYC!
Who is this for?
Developers, Project Managers, Scrum Masters, On-Site Customers, Testers and Product Managers. Anybody at all involved in software development can benefit from this material. If you can take the course with your team, you'll gain a shared experience that will be invaluble to the way you work together. Both Agile novices and experts will walk away with truly valuable new skills.
There are lots of courses out there. Why use my budget on "Art of Agile"?
Because no other course that we know of:
- Immerses the participants in a series of thought-provoking, interactive exercises to convey understanding of modern, Agile principles
- Demonstrates how excellence in creating software starts with the whole organization, not just the programmers
- Builds shared understanding and language among everybody who participates in software product development
- Proves the viability of Agile development practices by having the participants use them to build real software.
- You'll spend a week with recognized industry experts, as they share their experiences and discuss techniques that they've actually seen work in the real world.
- PMI Certification Credits: Jim Shore's book "The Art of Agile Development" (which you get a free copy of at the course) and Diana Larsen's book "Agile Retrospectives" are 2 of the 10 books that qualify for the ACP reference materials, and The Art of Agile course gives you a "certificate of completion" that may be used for PMI credits. This would be useful for anyone interested in getting one of the PMI certifications. http://www.pmi.org/Certification.aspx
Days 1 & 2: The Art of Agile Planning (April 23rd - April 24th)
In this course, you'll learn everything you need to know to plan an Agile project through hands-on, interactive activities.
On the first day, you'll learn how planning works at the iteration level, including stand-ups, stories, velocity and estimation, making commitments, and managing technical debt. Then, on the second day, we'll look at issues of strategic planning, including product management, minimum marketable features, adaptive planning, risk management, and balancing estimating cost with the need to make long-term commitments.
After completing this section, you will be prepared to:
- Create and prioritize stories, tasks, and minimum marketable features.
- Plan and coordinate Sprints (also called "iterations").
- Make reliable Sprint commitments and predict Sprint velocity.
- Customize your planning horizons to the need of your organization.
- Make release predictions for coordinating with third parties.
- Adapt your plans to create and take advantage of opportunities.

Days 3, 4, & 5: The Art of Agile Delivery (April 25th - April 27th)
This is a hands-on course with a heavy emphasis on doing, not watching! You will form cross-functional teams and deliver actual software in four 90-minute iterations, in a real-world environment that includes version control, automated builds, and continuous integration.
That's right: you'll design, build, test, and ship software, as well as build out your technical infrastructure, all in ninety minutes. If that sounds impossible, you need to come to this course!
We cover a lot of ground in this three-day section. We intersperse the real-world iterations with lots of interactive workshops to ensure that you can experience and remember everything you learn. Come prepared to drink from the firehose! Topics include test-driven development, refactoring, collaborating in a cross-functional team, working with stakeholders, and much more.
After completing this section, you will be prepared to:
- Build and ship software weekly
- Understand and accommodate stakeholders and their diverse opinions
- Work in a cross-functional team with on-site customers, testers, and programmers
- Prevent build failures with continuous integration
- Incrementally build technical infrastructure alongside features
- Create nearly bug-free code using test-driven development, refactoring, and exploratory testing
